Why Mobile Phones Can't Be Used on a Plane

The eternal discussion follows on. Whether it is technically proved that the use of mobile phones could get to the point to interfere with some of the electronic controls of the plane, some airlines say they have developed new systems in which the use of mobile phones would be allowed. How does it work? Are we going to be able to use our mobile phones when traveling on a plane in the future?

Studies from NASA and Boeing have concluded that the cause of some in-flight incidents were caused by the use of electronic devices by passengers. This is nothing we can oppose to at first sight. On the other side, there is a problem that is not involved purely with safety on the plane but safety for the telecommunication companies.

Mobile phones use determined channels which are provided by telecommunication towers placed on the earth surface. Multiple persons can use a same channel, and it simply will be the one that gives away the communications tower that is placed close to you. While on land it is easy that you will always have a tower which is the most close to you, when in the air it is possible that multiple towers are placed more or less at the same distance from the plane many times during the flight.

At this points, it is possible that your call is occupying more than one channel at the same time. For your part of the game, this is going to cause strong interferences. At same time, is going to cause them to other users. And at the worst, it is proven that if some problems like this strike a same tower at the same time, the systems can crash.

In any case, even if the communications software system is able to deal with this interferences and with the presence of many channels for one single user, the capacity of the network will be strongly reduced, which will affect also all other users that are calling at same time, causing usually a partial breakdown of the systems.

There are some more adventurous thinkers who believe airlines do not want passengers to use their mobile phones. Instead, they want them to use in-flight phone service, which is a lot more expensive. In any case, this is nothing proven and unless further investigation is done in the top of any conclusion could be misleading.
